About

I provide private lesson instruction and coaching for intermediate-advanced and advanced violinists and cellists. I also offer set-up/alignment coaching (if your shoulder rest never feels quite right, if your alignment feels off, struggling with injury, etc.). If you choose to join my studio for ongoing lessons, you will receive all the benefits of a regular lesson, alignment coaching, and performance coaching. I am happy to teach or coach you online or in-person. **As of January 2024 I am only accepting online students for the time being**

Please note:

*Private lessons are only offered on a weekly basis. I do not offer bi-weekly or once-a-month lessons. Short-term alignment coaching can occur anytime.

*VF Strings is for serious musicians committed to taking private lessons year round who are dedicated to their advancement on their instrument. Occasional participation in our quartet program is preferred if you are an in-person student of age (10+). The next quartet program will run Summer of 2024. Please write about our string quartet program in your inquiry if you would like more information.

So many things to like about working with VF Strings! Ms. Floyd makes every lesson so personal. She is always assessing my goals and crafting the lesson to lead me to success. Her expertise and creativity inspire me. She is a truly gifted artist and a master teacher. When teaching a technique, if the original approach is not working, she has many other ideas! I didnt start playing until 18 months ago at the age of 57 and I cant imagine that I will ever stop. Join us! She is FABULOUS!!!

    Frequently asked questions

The process is so different with everyone, as everyone's experiences and needs are unique. Ultimately, understanding your history, identifying your goal, and then forming an action plan applies to everyone. Working as a team with trust and understanding is the only way to achieve success.
I have 18 years of playing experience and 13 years of teaching experience. With teaching, I've seen it all. I have helped my students overcome their challenges and hurdles, getting to their goals so much quicker than they imagined was possible. I tend to see the hidden details that others do not pick up on, which is often the missing piece when someone is "stuck." I love the process as we encounter many breakthroughs.
My studio operates on a monthly payment basis for lessons, and packages for short-term coaching.
I began teaching super early. I was an advanced player who was recognized as a leader with great communication skills in the orchestra I was in. My conductor at the time recommended me to teach students who were struggling, and it all fell into place from there.
I have taught every age and ability level; young children, pre-teens, teens, adults, older adults, and everyone in between. My youngest student was 3 years old, and my oldest student was in her 70's. Currently, I am only working with advanced intermediate and advanced students. There are no age requirements; I will always coach in a way the student can understand based on their age and experience.
Summer of 2021, I started a local Chamber Music Quartet program in my studio. I arranged and coached groups of string quartets, and after 9 weeks of rehearsals, we put on a performance in a local park for our studio families and community members. This program continues to run annually as it is something everyone in the studio looks forward to. It is such an amazing transformation to see everyone grow as musicians as they learn to play together. We touch upon nearly every aspect of musicianship and have so much fun playing and performing!
Have them define "technique" for you. If they are giving you exercises in a book without analyzing your set up and foundation, look elsewhere. Find someone who can transform your set-up if you are physically uncomfortable playing, or struggling more than what seems right. It's not supposed to be difficult, tiring, or painful. In addition to the technicals, find someone who speaks to your heart and sees you for what you want to become. This mirroring aspect will help hold you accountable to achieve your goals. If you are seriously considering majoring in music at a conservatory, make sure your teacher knows how to guide you through that process or at least prepare you to get to the pre-conservatory level in a timely manner (usually by age 13-14). Ask if they have any experience working with gifted & talented individuals, or whatever your unique circumstances or specific learning needs are.
What is my ultimate goal? What motivates me, and what type feedback am I looking for? What would help get me progress to the next level that I want to achieve?
