Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We enjoy meeting and working with any student at any level. We often have a meet and greet where the student can come by or Zoom with the teacher and share a bit about who they are and what they love and would like to accomplish. We will answer any questions and then we can set our lesson schedule if we are on one accord! We have many types of students - children and adult students on new instruments, exploring multiple instruments, students who work in professional fields who need one time or periodic special training or coaching. Our goal is to accommodate you and hope that you enjoy and come again and again!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
We collectively have over 40 years of professional experience. Instructors with studies range from The New School, to University of North Texas, Berklee School of Music and abroad. Our instructors compose, arrange, have published educational materials and are currently playing music in some of the most promenant msucial settings worldwide.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
We have a range for our pricing that is really based on the length of the lesson. Our prices are relatively low because our goal is to create music pioneers, not to get rich! $100-$180 per month and if you add siblings it's half of the class fee selected. Once we assess things we can give you a solid quote! Special offers for multi-instrumentalist and perks for early bird payemnts, bringing a friend, attending special performnaces and participating in concerts and recitals!
How did you get started teaching?
I am the owner and director of Jazz BeCuzz, Candace “Mahogany" Miller! We all have very interesting stories about our journey with music. I have always had a teachers heart. I think it all started with my cabbage patch kids and barbies, lined in a row on my bed. But seriously, My mother was a teacher and I come from a family of musicians. My teaching starting when I begin producing music at the early age of 11! Believe it or not I got the opportunity write music and songs for artist in the music industry at an early age while playing for a church and instructing others and have not stopped yet. What a ton of TASKS! I adore my students, I love what i do, and I enjoy providing the opportunity for our teachers to meet great families and for great families to experience AWESOME teachers!
What types of students have you worked with?
We have students who are simply looking to get better at what they do. We also have students and former students who do Theater, Videos work, who are pursuing careers in major theater and commercial music settings and have professional booking agents, travel to auditions and act. The music styles vary as well. Some explore jazz and blues while others are in pop and Hip Hop. We have students who also still assistance in thier worship duties in various CCM and Gospel settings. Our staff and resident instructors are great!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
We are fond of nd embracing the VIRTUAL movement for teaching and entertaining!this has also opened the door for so many talented people to share. People who are brave enough to boldly share thier gifts. This is a great transition for those from an older way of learning and sharing music! I encourage students to both learn the fundimentals of music as well as explore their heart and creativity. This has opened the door and given the audience indeed!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher you trust, who is honest but encouraging. Some students need something a little more hard core, while others need a gentle hand. Explore in a creative environment you love and don't feel hindered. Don't ever let anyone put out your artistic fire and view EVERY opportunity as a learning one. You can turn any strained experience into a valuable tool!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Ask yourself: where I am going with this? Am I willing to do the work what I'm assigned to do on order to improve? Do I understand that things take time and results may not be come over night, but will come soon if I do my part?
