About

50 plus years of experience with acoustic fretted string instruments with emphasis on clawhammer banjo, finger style guitar and double strung instruments from the mandolin family. I have performed in over two thousand shows highlighting Celtic, folk and old time rock and roll. I taught for 15 years at the Irish Cultural Center until I decided to restrict teaching activities to my home. I am an enthusiastic teacher and eager to teach students who want to learn a craft that will provide countless hours of fun and enjoyment. Music has to be a labor of love.

Seeing the enjoyment music provides for the student as they progress. To learn music it has to be fun. If it's force fed then the student will probably resist learning or practicing. My lessons are meant to be fun and not drudgery and they are fun!

Frequently asked questions

Cover basics such as holding the instrument, proper positioning of both hands and fingers, fretting of the strings and developing finger and hand strength. Of course students will be taught how to tune the instrument and how tuning pegs/gears are used in the process. Care of fingernails is stressed. Students will learn some basic chords and families and this is used to make music. The so called "caged system" is used in this process. We then move on to basic songs and the different time signatures come into play and to play them in time metronomically. We work with both accompaniment and soloing using a chord melody. Selected material will be determined by both the teacher and the student. Lessons will be tailor made to each student's personal progress and interests.

i am self taught because that's the way I learn. I observe other musician's continuously in order to enhance my own skills. I am well versed on music theory but mostly play by ear. I have performed in multiple bands with 2,000 plus shows over the last 25 years.

$20 per half hour lesson and $40 per hour lesson.

People who heard me perform asked me to teach them and I did

Mostly beginners or novices but I have requests to teach specific styles to experienced students.

I just performed with my Irish band at a local festival this past weekend. I also perform at Highland Games and do Scottish music. I also started and coordinate an acoustic jam session in my community.

Be sure the teacher is enthusiastic and motivated to teach you.   Make sure the teacher can teach you what you want to learn.

Teachers experience level. How do they plan to get you up and running as quickly as possible? What will be my practice routine and how much time should I devote to it each day? What do I do if I'm spinning my wheels? Is the teacher accessible to me by phone if I need help? How is my progress measured? Does the teacher keep detailed notes on lesson plans and progress? Does the teacher have a lesson plan developed for me prior to each lesson? How does the teacher help me relax during the lesson? Does the teacher communicate clearly and effectively?
