Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I am met with a new student, my initial response is to ask them about their playing experience and what their goals with tennis are. After that, I will quickly assess their comfort holding a racquet, standing on the court, interacting with the court, just to see exactly where their visible experience and said experience intersect. After that I get a baseline analysis of technical strengths and weaknesses to improve and strengthen as needed, to achieve their primary goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing tennis with a focus on competing at the highest level since ag 10. I have won and played in tournaments predominantly in Southern California, and in international invitee tournaments across the nation. I am also completing my USPTA certification training.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Standard pricing is $40/hour as of now. I do also offer shortened lessons for younger players, hitting lessons for more advanced players, and group lessons as well.
How did you get started teaching?
I got started teaching in high school over the summer.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught students as young as three years old and as old as 80. All levels of play from first time beginners to aspiring starters at college.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Most recently during a clinic I was teaching serves and I noticed one of the students was having a particularly tough time reaching up high to the ball, which can cause injuries and inaccuracies. I took them aside and demonstrated on the fence in the back how to best asses the ball toss height for an ideal serve. They had mentioned some elbow pain in contact, however, after advising her on best contact point, there was no pain and they repeatedly made good clean contact.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
My best advice for any aspiring tennis player is to look for a coach that you enjoy getting lessons from and feel comfortable asking any kind of question to.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should focus most on how to improve strengths, and seek advice on how to turn liabilities neutral. I think the biggest hindrance to players is trying to turn weaknesses into strengths too quickly.
