About

--Currently not taking more students--

Hi! I’m Shannen and I’m a second year UC Berkeley student. Currently, I’m an Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Major planning to minor in music.

I’ve been playing piano for around 10 years and flute in my school's marching band for 3 years. Starting in 9th grade, I prepared for the Certificate of Merit exams for piano under Dr. Yan Yan Chan, completing all 10 levels by senior year.

I’ve been tutoring students for almost 3 years in various academic subjects as well as teaching piano and music theory, tutoring 9 kids so far. I’m currently privately teaching kids as a member of Cal’s The Music Connection, which provides free music education to local schools and low-income families.

Teaching is incredibly rewarding as both the student and I are always learning something new. I also really enjoy getting to know the student and understanding how they learn best.

I pride myself in steering away from monotonous, traditional methods of teaching music by reaching out to different genres, trying different approaches to music, and catering more to student interests. The experience should be fulfilling for both sides and I honestly find the most excitement in seeing this happen.

When I asked my son for his feedback about Shannen, he offered: Shannen teaches at a good pace, not too fast and not too slow. She is a good listener and explains things well. She also picks good music for you to practice. As a parent, my observations were that Shannen is fun but also serious/professional and she doesnt rattle easily. She always stays positive and is able to redirect any challenging behavior that tends to pop up towards the end of lessons when my son gets tired. She sets clear goals and expectations, and she pushed him in a positive way to reach past his comfort zone. She is wonderful and we are delighted to recommend her.

    Frequently asked questions

With new students, I prioritize keeping a positive, curious mindset, as interest and commitment beat natural talent. It's hard to control how perfect learning a new instrument will be and how much time is needed to get the hang of it, but what can be controlled is a good attitude.

In general, I really encourage students to experiment on their own. Piano playing is a personal experience and is anything but strict. Students learn better if they find their own approaches rather than simply having rules and information thrown at them.

    - Completed all 10 levels of the Certificate of Merit exam under Dr. Yan Yan Chan.

    - Employed at and trained by Amabile School of Music in San Francisco and Moraga.

    - Privately taught 2 students as a volunteer at Berkeley's The Music Connection.

    - Have privately taught an additional 5 students piano and music theory.

I began teaching when my teacher became overwhelmed with lessons shortly before our CM exams a few years ago. I lightened the burden by privately tutoring music theory for 3 of her younger students, a lovely and rewarding experience. After the exam, I wanted to continue! So I reached out and taught a family friend's daughter for a few months. Then I moved to Berkeley, where I became employed under the Amabile School of Music and also volunteered to privately teach via The Music Connection. I've also had experience teaching virtually during quarantine. Now I've been reaching out to more and more sources of teaching music.

I've taught students from age 4 years to 30 years old

Looking at a teacher's qualifications is important but not everything! You're going to want to find someone who understands you and your learning style. Teaching is more than just one person spewing information and instructions, it's a double-sided event.

Some important things to ask: Does the teacher have experience with students in your age range? Experience level? Do they come off as someone you can feel comfortable around?

These are just a few to help you determine the right teacher.
