About

I have been playing drums since the age of 13 with no plans to ever stop! In my lessons, I instill in my students not only the skills to excel on the instrument, but a love of music itself. Through a combination of performance, music theory, and practice regimen, I get my students to have fun drumming in no time!

Nothing is better than getting to share my love of music with others. Watching students go from struggling with the instrument to learning to have fun playing is a unique joy that only comes from teaching.

He was an awesome teacher that really helped me get confident with the drums. I would recommend him to anyone looking for lessons.

    Frequently asked questions

I will usually start with a phone interview or in-person conversation with the prospective student (or the student's parent) to assess their current level of musical education (if any), their favorite musicians or styles, what they hope to get out of their lessons, etc. I will then tailor each lesson to the student, while always basing my lessons in music theory, performance fundamentals, and regular practice.

I studied music theory and music appreciation in middle school, high school and college, while taking private lessons in drums on the side. I spent 3 summers at Soundwall Rock Music Camp in Santa Cruz, Calif. I've also played in several bands, recorded with some others, and continue to play, write and record with my own band Inkblot.

A typical lesson is $45 per hour if the student comes to me, $50 if I travel to you.

Music is collaborative by nature. We're meant to play with others as often as possible! In meeting other guitarists, bassists, singers, etc. you'll inevitably hear them say, "I've always wanted to learn the drums." Being the naturally helpful person I am, I showed them some basics just in my spare time. Through the encouragement of my other musician friends, I started teaching!

Make sure your teacher recognizes the importance of music theory and practicing to a metronome. Too many teachers don't do this! Having fun is important, of course, but it's essential to learn the fundamentals of music and rhythm or it can seriously inhibit your progress.

Students should ask themsevles, why do I want to learn the drums? If it's purely for fun, that's totally ok! Whether it's just to mess around or to reach your dreams of rock stardom, it's important to go into drum lessons with a goal in mind.

Other important questions: What styles of music do I want to focus on? Which musicians do I want to emulate? Before I buy a drumset, am I willing to put in the months or years of practice to reach my goals?
