About

Many "voice teachers" in the LA area are simply folks that sing. That is not what one should look for in a voice teacher. Not only do I know how to build a voice, but i know how to help you find your own voice in such a way that you will be able to sing safely for many years. First learn the basics of vocal production from a real singer who knows how to sing without a mic and how to develop a voice before you decide on what style of singing you want. Teachers should have a solid classical background and not be just someone who just likes to sing and has sung in clubs, not someone who plays a guitar or piano and can accompany you but can't help you use your voice. You need to find a teacher who can help you understand how the voice is put together and functions.

I love helping students discover that, yes, they can sing...and it's not all that hard. I love helping students discover their own sound, not someone else's.

Frequently asked questions

I just signed up with this service so my reviews are on another service.  I will be glad to send them to you.

If the student has never sung, we simply start at the beginning with the basics.  Even if someone has sung before it is good to review the basics.  Then after a few months for a beginner we start on simple songs to put into practice what we've worked on.  Singing involves muscles and coordinating various body systems so the learning takes time.  I have you record your lessons so that you can listen critically at home.  No practicing for the first few months but you see me twice a week, so it is like you're practicing with me and not doing something wrong at the beginning.

I have an MFA in vocal performance and have done a lot of performing all over the world. I also took a course in grad school on the anatomy and physiology of voice which really helped me to understand what is going on when one phonates (makes a noise) which includes, of course, speech and singing.  I also continue to go to workshops for teachers sponsored by the National Association of Teachers of Singing. I am NOT a guitar or piano player who came to teaching voice because i can read music and do some singing myself.  I love finding a singing voice in someone who thinks they might have one but just isn't sure.  It is a very exciting journey of discovery for both of us.

$60/hr for the first month of lessons.  After that it is $70/hr with the student preferably coming once a week if possible.

i am a singer who loves sharing what i know about the voice with others.  In grad school i saw that some natural singers would enter as freshmen and sound worse a year later.  At that point i decided that as well as perform, I wanted also to teach, hopefully doing that better than what i had heard happening in grad school.

All levels, all ages from age 11 or so up.  I have worked with people who just wanted to be able to carry a tune, folks that already had a degree in musical theater and wanted to polish their audition songs, cabaret singers, jazz singers, composers who wanted to record their own songs.  I work with students that want to sing in all types of styles and sing varied repertoire.  First we get down the basics.  Then we work on whatever you are interested in.

i have several students who are now singing at small theaters around LA.  it took about 6 months, but they already were in pretty good singing shape having majored in musical theater in college.  I helped a tone deaf student sing Happy Birthday!  For her that was a big thing and she can now go on to learn more songs as well as understand what her actors (she is a stage director) need to know about singing.  I had a blues guitarist who was going on tour and needed a quick fix.  and on and on.

Check the credentials and experience of your provider.  Don't just go for the cheapest teacher out there.  Your voice is too precious to fool around with and can easily be damaged over time with abusive singing.

Ask your potential teacher:

How long have you been teaching?  Do you do continuing education workshops?

The student should figure out if they understand that this is a long haul project.  no overnight miracles.
