Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I first like to get to know my student(s). I want to learn what it is that they want in the industry, what they have already tried that worked or did not work, and what abilities they have. I like to understand what motivates them for what they are doing, and be certain that they understand that they should be doing it for the right reasons. Then, armed with that information, I can formulate an appropriate class schedule that will help them be their best selves, as well as learn a great deal.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been in the industry for 40 years. I have been an actor, singer, writer, director, producer, and critic, and know what does and does not work. I am a life-long member of the Writers Guild, Directors Guild, and PRoducers Guild, and have published numerous things under a writer's sur name. All of this information and background gives me an understanding of the industry and its people that I can desciminate to my students in a manner that they can both understand and utilize.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I prefer to teach group classes whenever possible, but also work one on one with my students. I prefer to come to my students, or meet in a location that is half way between me and my student. How far I have to travel, where I will be meeting with my student(s), and precisely what I will be teaching will affect what I charge. However, I believe you find that if you are in this for the right reasons, you find that my pricing is more than fair, and usually better than most of the 'schools' you can attend.
How did you get started teaching?
I believe in people. I want to see each and every person that I work with do something that not only matters, but also makes them feel better about who they are personally. I want to see a better, more intelligent, and more viable industry, and I know that happens one person at a time. I dedicated myself to instructing others for this reason. I have been teaching and directing for over 30 years now. I do not accept all students. I want my students to be real people who are attempting a career in this industry for the right reasons.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of students; all ages, races, cultures, and backgrounds. I truly enjoy working with people, but do not deal with DIVAS. These individuals will NEVER last in the industry. I want to work with real people who want to make a difference in the world through the work that they do, not just become famous or rich, as this is rarely the case.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I just finished filming and editing a 2 hour Fan Film with my current group, The Actors Coalition Network of Los Angeles, which is involved with iTVFest, and the International Star Trek Fan FIlm Festival in Europe. I have loved working with these people, and we are now optioning a new episodic based on this pilot project.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Know who you are, what you want, why you want it, and understand that it is going to take REAL WORK to get there, and that work is not going to be easy. You must be a disciplined, self-aware, dedicated, honest, and genuine person, or you will not last in this industry.
