About
I am recently retired from teaching elementary school and have always wanted to teach sewing. I sew, crochet and embroider. I want to share these old-fashioned, creative and useful skills with others. Now is the perfect time to learn a new hobby. I always make my family's holiday gifts and you can too! I can teach you how to buy material, select and use a pattern and create your own clothing. I have a portable sewing machine that I can bring to your home. Willing to wear a mask!
I AM ALSO A RETIRED TEACHER AVAILABLE FOR TUTORING! My expertise is third grade, but I have taught first and second. My current tutee started with me when she was in third grade, but I have continued with her through fifth grade now. I can tutor in both Math and Language Arts. I have a Master's Degree in Reading and Fluency with twenty years teaching experience.
My grandmother and aunts as well as my mother all sew. I feel I am passing on a tradition, a lost art. My mother worked at a fabric store when I was a child and regularly made my clothing. I love creating embroidered treasures and keepsakes. I have been teaching second and third grade for twenty years. I'd like to continue teaching through the creative medium of sewing, crocheting and embroidery.
AVAILABLE FOR TUTORING! I am retiring from twenty years of teaching in public education, but I would still enjoy teaching children to read and understand Math better. I can enrich what your child's current teacher is teaching, help your child get caught up or facilitate online learning. I am available evenings for homework help. A lifelong learner myself, I LOVE to instill the love of learning in young children.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We can meet online if you like to discuss your specific needs. Whether you're interested in tutoring or sewing lessons, I will adjust my teaching to exactly what you need. For student tutoring, a recent teacher's assessment or comment is helpful, but I can quickly assess any student. For sewing lessons, a discussion can lead to a quick plan.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Sewing Lessons- I have been sewing as long as I can remember. My family is full of crafters! My mother worked in a fabric store when I was young, so I've been around sewing and fabric my whole life. I also crochet and embroider; two old-style crafts that I can teach you!
Tutoring- I have been teaching primary grades for twenty years. I have a Master's Degree in Reading and Fluency.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$35 and hour
How did you get started teaching?
I graduated from college as an "older" adult and began teaching in 1999. I left my career as a property manager to pursue teaching. I continued my education after my son was born and acquired my Master's Degree at age 45. Now, I am almost 60 and I chose to retire from public education to do private tutoring and sell my crafts.
What types of students have you worked with?
Mostly, I have worked with third-graders, age 8 - 9. I have taught three of my friends how to sew.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Presently, we are in the midst of the Corona pandemic. Last week, after not seeing each other in two months, my women's group from church met at a park, six feet apart. There were only "long-distance" hugs but it sure was nice to actually SEE everyone face to face. That was so nice!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure that you are comfortable with that person's character and personality. Always offer honest feedback. A good teacher will respond in kind to productive feedback.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Exactly what do you need help in? What is it that you would like me to help you accomplish? What have you tried in the past? How do you learn best- oral presentation, visual cues, music, kinestetics?
