About

Hello!

My name is Amy Helfrich. I recently retired as a soloist dancer at American Contemporary Ballet, where I performed numerous roles such as Snow Queen in the Nutcracker, Balanchine's Elegie, and various leads in the company's world wide premiere's. I have a BFA in ballet from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where I took four years of courses learning how to teach ballet to students of all ages and levels. While there I studied under former principal dancer of American Ballet Theatre, Susan Jaffe, as well as Nina Danilova, Jared Reddick, and Jennet Zerbe.

I have been teaching children and adults ballet since 2013, both in group classes and private lessons. Many of my students have come to me knowing very little about ballet, and I am passionate about helping them reach their goals. I also have many advanced students who want to refine their technique to reach the next level. I am currently looking to teach private lessons to students of any age and level!

I love being able to help my students achieve their goals. Each student has a different goal in mind, and I find it so fulfilling to help guide them to get where they want to be!

    Frequently asked questions

With all new students I like to begin by asking what their goals are. From there I have an idea of how to plan each of our classes together so we can maximize both of our time!

I have a BFA in ballet from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where I studied how to teach ballet for four years. Before university, I danced at numerous summer intensives such as Kirov, Bolshoi, The Rock School, and Washington Ballet.

I would say that there are a lot of people who teach ballet, that never had a career in ballet. I think it's important to have a teacher that has danced as a professional ballerina, because they have a greater understanding of techinique and how to apply the technique into their dancing, whether it be on stage or just for fun. If done incorrectly, ballet can be harmful to the body, but dancers who have real life experience know how it should feel and are able to communicate that to their students more easily.
