Stephanie Sabin Vocal Studio
About
Stephanie Sabin has been teaching singers of all levels for over 20 years. A performing vocalist herself, she is well aware of what it takes to be a successful vocalist. Stephanie has developed a method of teaching that for the young student, provides a healthy base for vocal growth as the student matures. For the adult singer, Stephanie's pedagogical knowledge makes it easy for her to adjust her teaching to fit the particular needs of the student, in whatever style of music they sing. Her work with the mature adult (60+ years of age) helps to restore vocal chord strength and breath support. Stephanie is an active member (currently the board Vice President and District Governor) in the San Diego chapter of NATS (the National Association of Teachers of Singing). She maintains a working relationship with San Diego Opera as well as many high schools throughout the area. She is also maintains a thriving private voice studio in San Diego (North Park) Del Mar and Rancho Bernardo/Poway.
It's always a pleasure and an honor to see individuals discover their voices and what those voices can do to express more sincerely and authentically. Learning to sing is a whole body and mind experience since the body IS the entire instrument, mot the voice alone.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
A first lesson involves discussing with the student their goals, difficulties they find with their voices, and then assessing how they access their voice through a series of vocal warm ups and breathing exercises. Depending on where they are beginning in their journey, some students will work solely on breath and the application of sound on that breath for the first 2-4 lessons. This creates a firm foundation for the vocalist to launch from into singing and performing songs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
In addition to teaching and performing a variety of styles for over 20 years, both of my degrees (Bachelor's and Master's) are in Vocal Performance with the emphases in Opera Performance, Production and Direction.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
For students and seniors:
$60 an hour lesson, $40 a half hour lesson.
For Adults/non student:
$75 an hour lesson, $100 a 90mins lesson ($40 a half hour lesson)
How did you get started teaching?
I fell into teaching during my undergrad and discovered that I really enjoyed working with others discovering their voices. As a performer, teaching grounds me and performing gives me material to teach.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with the beginning vocalist to the semi-professional/professional vocalist/singin actor.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I'm a Music Director and Conductor in addition to being a Professional Soprano and Voice teacher. In May, I had the privelage to work with a wonderful group of young professionals at the Coronado Playhouse on the production of Violet: The Musical. It was an incredible concert version of the show and I have fallen in love with the musical, not knowing it before I worked on it.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Always remember, this is a team effort and this relationship needs to be honored as such. Students who expect to be spoon fed the same information every time a new song is introduced will not learn anything. It's important to own your work, your exploration, your questions and your accomplishments. I encourage indepedence, inquistivness, as well as being open to trying new ways of accessing the voice.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Why do you want private voice lessons? What does having a private voice lesson mean to you? What are you hoping to get out of a private lesson? Are you willing to take some risks (mild and within reaason) in exploring your voice as an instrument? And actually, while these questions are good to ask before talking with the a teacher, they will also give the teacher you're looking for good information about what you're wanting to accomplish.
