My teaching approach:

I'll be happy to teach acoustic guitar to levels ranging from first-time player to intermediate/advanced. Though my main style is now folk, I\'ve played in bands ranging from folk to alt. to punk to heavy metal, etc. and would be happy to help with any style within my capabilities. Since I\'ve never been classically trained to read musical partiture I focus more on students with interest in learning while CREATING their own style to be able to play whatever song/style they\'d like and eventually write their own music. I have much experience working with children and youth. Happy practicing! -ZD

My influences are:

My influences range from my early days as a heavy metal guitarist to the recent years and today as a folk guitarist and all the bands I\'ve been in in-between. These days my influences would be Brandi Carlile, James Taylor, Bon Iver, Dave Grohl, John Mayer and so many more.

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

I generally have the student show me what he or she already knows how to and likes to play. That way I can analyze his or her form of playing and see if there are any fundamental changes that need to take place since the basic techniques are the building blocks for the more advanced ones. It\'s important to make sure the player hasn\'t developed any bad/lazy playing habits early on. From there I come up with a plan moving forward based on the abilities the student already has.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

My lessons are always first and foremost focused on the desire of the student. What style, songs, techniques, etc. does he or she want to learn. I then analyze those desires and come up with a plan on how to reach that goal. I focus on warmup exercises and practice techniques that will lead the student on a steady path to being able to play fluidly and precisely. My previous teaching experience and passion for music make for a guaranteed progress in the student\'s abilities.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

My ideal guitar student is one that has a real desire to learn and is willing to put the time in to do so. In a contrary case, my job is to motivate and inspire this person to find that desire.
