About

My written policy and philosophy of teaching says: "I teach music as a means of enjoyment and self-expression, and to foster creativity. In addition, I believe that a thorough background in the basics of reading music and music theory is essential to a well-rounded education."

Yes, that's true . . . But kind of formal and stuffy, isn't it? What it doesn't tell you is that I love to teach, and welcome the variety of levels, goals, and needs that aspiring pianists bring to my studio. A one-size-fits-all approach simply doesn't get results, and I choose methods and materials very carefully to match students' individual learning styles. My teaching focuses on logical presentation of musical concepts and techniques, the importance of strong rhythmic understanding, and developing good practice habits. My students don't necessarily know they're getting all this, though--they just think we're having a good time making music!

I have 35 years experience teaching students of all ages and levels. My youngest beginning pianist was 4; the oldest 87. Recently I taught beginning class piano at a local senior center. I've also accompanied professionally for soloists and choirs, served as pianist and co-director of music at several churches, played harpsichord in early music groups, and performed extensively as a solo and ensemble pianist.

Please consider studying with me . Beyond all these serious ideas, I believe love and laughter foster the best learning.
