Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
For brass with a beginning student I start with getting used to what it feels like to play the intrument. Then from there I add on reading notes and even a little improvisation to get used "speaking" music on the instrument.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BM in Music Education and MM in Euphonium performance and have been teaching for over 10 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$25 for a half hour lesson, or $45 for an hour lesson. Half hour lessons are recommended for beginning and intermediate students. I only recommend an hour lesson if the student is willing to commit to practicing an average of one hour each day for five days a week.
How did you get started teaching?
I actually didn't want to teach private piano or brass lessons, but when I was in high school I was begged by two young girls I knew to teach them piano and I haven't looked back. It's a lot of fun and there are always new challenges with new students and I enjoy that variety.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught piano lessons to all ages from 3 to over 80 and I have taught brass to students from 3rd graders through Seniors in High School. I have also taught band in the past, so a wide variety of students have crossed my path. I have learned that not all students learn in the same way, so I make it my goal to always explain a new concept in a variety of ways so that the student can remember the new concept the way that works best for him/her.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I love getting to see my students perform for others. There is a special connection that happens when a student gets to share what he/she has been working on with someone else and that is one of my favorite experiences to see.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher that teaches in a way that you understand. All teachers have different teaching styles and all learners have different learning styles. If you feel you are struggling understanding what is being taught, let your teacher know.
