Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start by making sure their instrument is the proper size and holds its tuning, that the bow hair isn't worn out, and that the student is comfortable with their grip and shoulder rest.
Then I use a mixture of the Suzuki and Essential Elements books to make sure the student has a diverse set of pieces that aren't too challenging or too trivial.
I like to start with the bow immediately, and I put tapes on the student's instrument to help with their intonation. I also like to start immediately with aural skills training to develop the ear's ability to hear when things are in tune or out of tune, and whether notes are late or early.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a degree in Music Composition from Georgia State University with violin as my main instrument. Upon graduating in 2020, I started teaching in shops around the Asheville area, which I have done for two years now.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons start at 20$ for a 30 minute session, 25$ for a 45 minute session, and 30$ for an hour session.
How did you get started teaching?
I started by teaching music to friends and family in college, then got my professional start at a shop in Hendersonville, and finally started teaching in Asheville.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have over 20 students in all age ranges, from 4 to 75, and at all ability levels.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently performed in a musical which I thoroughly enjoyed. I quite like doing musicals because I enjoy how much of an event it is, and I like watching the actors.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher who is authentically supportive, who pushes you to improve but doesn't burn you out on your instrument, and who can help you acheive a complex and deep understanding of the music you are playing
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What times you would be open to having lessons, and whether you want to do a 30 minute, 45 minute, or an hour lesson. Younger students should go with shorter lessons.
