Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to begin with the basics. Even if the student isn't a beginner, this helps me assess his/her skill level and foundational knowledge. Progression of lessons will depend on the student's preference, skill level, and personal learning speed.
I offer instruction on principals of form, shading, line and perspective, which will be both discussed and demonstrated in simple, step by step lessons. Lessons are based on principals of Classical Atelier with a modern twist!
For in person lessons, all materials are provided. Online lessons are through Zoom.
After the preliminary exercises are completed, I allow the student to direct the choices of subjects to draw and paint to make sure lessons remain engaging, although I may make suggestions if I think a particular subject would benefit the student to practice.
Comments and crisitsism are always constructive and positive! These lessons are meant to be encouraging and useful to propel the student along with good foundational skills. Art should always be a fun, liberating activity, and it's my goal to help fuel the joy of creativity by providing practical knowledge and experience.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Certificates from the London College of Art of both Merit and Distinction in both Life Drawing, Drawing and Painting, Children's Illustration and Art History, and more than two years personal instruction in general fine art techniques at the Schissler Academy of Art in Loveland, Colorado. Followed by personalized instruction in watercolor and color theory by Amanda Gress of Gress Art Studios, in Loveland, Colorado.

How did you get started teaching?
My first experience teaching was at a home-based girls' club for homeschooled young ladies to learn arts and crafts, where I taught painting and drawing. I've also written some instructional articles on painting techniques.
What types of students have you worked with?
I currently work with a range of students from children to adults, and all sessions are private unless otherwise requested. (Such as mother-daughter sessons, or if you bring a friend).
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I've enjoyed working on and completing several portrait, pet portrait and fine art commissions lately, mostly in colored pencils. Follow me on Facebook and Instagram to see what I'm working on!

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Invest in quality supplies--good sketch pads, different hardnesses of pencils, a kneaded eraser, a sharpener, etc. Read art books, watch Youtube tutorials, practice and doodle A LOT! But above all: keep having fun and don't give up. You CAN do this! :)
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Which subjects give you the most joy to paint or draw? Are you ready to make mistakes and messes (essential for learning)? Are you open to new ideas and techniques you may not have tried before, but which may improve your own style?
