Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I will always offer the first session free of charge to get to know my new student and plan the upcoming lessons and performances. I like to break down simple barriers first and play some introductory games or name associations. Each of these give some simple acting exercises and a chance for me to get to know my students a little more. I do a lot of great warm ups with them for their faces and bodies, helping them become as comfortable as possible before performing. I also want them to know I value their feedback and how they learn so I will ask certain questions about what they want to gain from lessons. I want every student to know that ANY feedback they are getting is from one point of view and is to help them find more opportunities to build skill, it is NOT me judging them in any way. I want everyone to know that my class is first and foremost a safe, judgement-free place. :)
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I started acting lessons at 12 years old and began teaching at STARS camp at 17. I conducted short lessons each day for musical theatre performance and assistant directed a production at KISS theatre camp. I also worked as an assistant teacher and co-director for the Drama class at East Stroudsburg High School South. I began teaching acting online in September 2020, and have since then taught several students who have advanced in classes, auditions, and new programs. I have activites and plans for each class planned, so feel free to message me asking for more specific info on what will be taught!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I do not have standard pricing, but since I am still somewhat new to teaching students online or over video chat I would start rates at only $40-$50/hour. I also always offer the first session free to get to know the student and what they would like to learn! I would be willing to negotiate any payment plans as well if needed. To me theatre should be an experience that is fun and affordable!
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching/directing later in high school with peer shows after helping out with theatre camps and later on took a teaching role in camps. I'm passionate about working with kids, and then chose to pursue an education degree in college. This year has also taught me a lot about adjusting to teaching online, and I now have comfortable, adjusted lessons for online acting.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've mostly worked with small groups of kids aged 12-17 since those were the age groups I had for production workshops. Class sizes were usually 10-15 kids and teenage students. As of recently I have worked with several middle and high school-aged students on advancing basic skill and audition prep online, and have enjoyed seeing great improvement and quality of performance through zoom.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I have recently participated and co-wrote a devised theatre production online, which was an immensely rewarding experience for everyone involved. I have also taken part of the program A Moment of Magic as a performer and acting coach, which allows actors to portray Disney characters to visit and perform for underprivileged children in hospitals and over zoom. Each of these experiences have shown me the importance in keeping art alive in this time and that it is not impossible to learn and grow in performance now, even without a stage!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would hire someone who is most of all organized, prepared, and passionate about what they do. You want a teacher who is a strong communicator and makes you feel comfortable expressing yourself in any way. Acting is most easily perfected and enjoyed when you embrace every part of the experience.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I think students should think about what they want to get from the experience. They should also think about how they want to learn (especially online) and what strategies they want to perfect. They should be willing to put time and work into their art and not be afraid to fail and learn!
