Jim Coventry Photography
About
I was one of the first in my area to add digital to my quiver of tools. Along with that I got into using a computer instead of a darkroom. And, because of all the time I had spent learning photography and what it takes to get what I wanted, using Photoshop and other graphics application was easy for me.
The experience paid off. I also beta tested for Adobe and had a 5 man beta test team untill 1994. I continued testing through Adobe CS 5 in about 2014.
Because my 35mm camera and lenses were made by Canon, it was easy to move to Canon’s digital cameras and keep using the same lenses I had been using with film cameras.
Since then my career has demanded I keep up and try to stay ahead of the tech curve. The results can be seen in my work.
My commercial work demanded I get it done faster and better than competition and with less post production.
Color work is easier for me due to the time spent at MIT in classes designed by Kodak to teach the science of color which lead to my learning color separation and teaching color to my
employees and clients.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Start with teaching basic black and white photography and move into composition, chasing the light then story telling.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Began with education in commercial art at the Vocationsl Tech Institute, SIU Carbondale, IL then moved on to be a freelance graphic artist in Chicago then in Peoria, IL.
As a creative director in ad agencies, I was too hard to please when it came to photographs of
clients products, so I bought a camera and began to study how to use my new toy. I soon came o
realize what I had purchased was a tool and not a toy. Then I began investing more money and
more time at taking photos and developing my own film and prints. It didn’t take long till I was
getting better results than the professional photographers the agency had bee hiring. Plus, I didn’t
spend as much time retouching the prints I was providing. I knew what was best for my
customers, so when I made prints, I knew where and how much to dodge and burn. I owned and
used on a regular basis, 35 mm plus larger and mid sized film cameras. 4x5 - 5x7, 8x10 and
2.25x2.25
