About
My main goal as an instructor is to help my students practice and play better and more confidently. I love solving playing problems and want to pass on my knowledge and enthusiasm to others.
My teaching experience covers all levels, from beginner to university and advanced adults. In addition to private teaching, I have taught individual lessons and ensembles at Knox College, University of Illinois, Illinois Central College, University of Michigan's All-State Program, and Central Illinois Youth Music.
I have degrees in Flute Performance from Bradley University, Northern Illinois University, with further study at University of Illinois.
My greatest teaching joy is seeing the excitement and satisfaction a student has when they make a breakthrough, especially when that breakthrough leads them to the realization that they can do something they didn't think possible.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
At our first session, I like students to play something that they feel very comfortable playing, so I can gauge their skill level. I ask questions to find out what the student feels their strengths and weaknesses are, and if they have specific issues they want to work on.
From this assessment, I will devise a lesson a plan that addresses the student's concerns as well as what generally needs to be worked on in order to allow the student to move forward musically.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My university degrees are in Flute Performance. My personal study of music and the flute are ongoing, so my knowledge and capabilities are always growing.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching as a high school student, teaching younger students, giving them the basics and preparing them to move on to more advanced teachers.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught individual lessons and ensembles at all levels, from complete beginners to advanced adult students. I have taught in college programs, summer camp, and masterclass formats.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I have been directing a flute choir, and my fondest memory is almost always of the latest performance. There are always some unanticipated things that happen that we navigate through with unexpected grace, and often, something magical.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a teacher who is positive and supportive of your efforts, while holding you accountable for your work.
Identify the issues that you want to improve upon while being mindful that the teacher will have their own ideas of what you need to work on.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The biggest question for the student is how much time and effort they are willing to commit to the learning process. Next is whether they are willing to be open to the teacher's assessments and suggestions.
