I teach at your pace. Everyone has a different learning style and I'll develop a customized plan that works for you. I'll spend time with you at no charge for the first time either by phone or online prior to your first lesson to develop the lesson that works best for you based on the type of photography you want to learn. I'm available to answer questions in between lessons because I want you to progress and not have to wait a week before you can get out and use your camera.
My background includes a professional photography certification from the Washington School of Photography. I was formally trained in both film and digital media, worked 12 years as a professional photographer running my own business, 2 years of teaching as a community college adjunct instructor in black and white film and digital photography, and 2 additional years of continuing education in various photography courses for adults. I have also several taught private classes and small group workshops using any type of camera including cell phone cameras, point and shoots, SLR film cameras and DSLRs.
When I was learning photography, it was a thrill to finally be able to create the photograph that I had in my mind. I love to help my students feel that same thing when they really understand how to use their camera to capture the image they are thinking about. Teaching photography is one of the most rewarding jobs I've ever had and I feel so fortunate to help each and every student of mine!

good explanations. Barbara tried not to overwhelm me with too man details. She was very pleasant and knowledgeable.
Love the patience that Barbara has to explain every lesson, also always available to answer any questions I have about the assignments or about my cam. Highly recommend her!♥️
Absolutely outstanding. Barbara is tremendously talented, patient with a beginner, organized, experienced and professional. She has taught on the collegiate level and makes learning fun, interactive, dynamic and will move at your pace. She's flexible to customize the learning experience and specific outcomes to meet your goals. I haven't used lessons.com before, but feel tremendously lucky to have found Island Sun Photography. For either a beginner like myself or a more experienced person looking to expand their skills, I highly recommend her.
We'll meet for the first time at no charge over the phone or online video chat to discuss your photography goals and come up with a plan of action.
I recommend a minimum of 1 2-hour lessons, and in that time you'll do some hands-on practice with your camera and any accessories you may have. You'll learn how to get the maximum use out of your equipment.
At the end of each lesson you will go home with an assignment and techniques to practice on your own time. Each assignment will be critiqued at the next lesson and you'll get pointers on how to improve if needed.
We'll work on lighting, composition, and getting creative so that you can wow all your friends and family with your amazing photographs!
Graduated from Washington School of Photography in Washington, DC.
I started mentoring college students who contacted me to assist me with my business and eventually I began formal internships for college students along with teaching continuing education courses at the college. One of the art program professors asked me if I was interested in becoming an adjunct teacher for the academic film photography course and of course, I said yes! I worked as a teacher at the college for 2 years as both a film and digital photography instructor.
