About
Hello! I am an award winning film, video and still photography professional with over 35 years of experience. My professional career has spanned the television, film/video production and college education fields. I love to share my passion for story telling through the lens, and am known as a patient and conscientious teacher. Students seem to enjoy my hands-on teaching style and find it to be the most effective way to learn their craft.
My fascination with photography and film began as a teen. I enjoy the freedom it provides working in different places and meeting new people. My experiences have provided travel and adventure. I get great satisfaction from sharing my knowledge and experience and feel motivated by students who share my passion. The art of photography did not come naturally to me. I had to learn it the hard way (and still learning). I think this helps make me an effective instructor because I can break down concepts in very practical terms.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
It is important to understand that, as in most fields, there are technical and artistic aspects to photography. For example, you can learn how a pencil or word processor technically works, but that does not make you a writer. You need to choose which words to use to craft your story. The same is true with photography and film. A photographer learns how to use the equipment, but he/she also needs to know what pictures to capture to tell a story. I strive to teach both aspects equally.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated from the University of Georgia with a Journalism degree specializing in radio, TV and film. My career in television and film production spans over 35 years including 20 years at WXIA –TV in Atlanta, 3 years at WTVM in Columbus, GA and 18 years as a freelance director of photography, camera operator, director and producer. Additionally, I created the Television Production Technology program at Chattahoochee Technical College where I developed the curriculum, built the facility and taught and advised students. My awards include 12 Southeast Regional Emmy, 4 Telly, 1 Addy, 1 Iris, and 3 Broadcast Education Association Best of Competition awards for producing, directing, lighting, editing and photography; Rick Perkins award winner as the Technical College System of Georgia’s Teacher of the Year, DTAE Lighthouse award, 2 CTC leadership awards.
