Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Our first session is all about getting to know each other; I want to know about your previous experience with singing and taking voice lessons, the current state of your voice, and your goals. From there, I'll listen to you sing a song with which you're very familiar and listen for things that I can help you improve, in light of your goals. Finally, we'll discuss an action plan, and I'll show you some exercises and assign you some homework.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I attended Howard University in Washington, DC, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music focused on Voice for Jazz Studies.

• VIP2 - $1100 (USD) (22 hours)

GROUP (2+ people):
• Pricing for group lessons depends on variables and is a great way to save even more money. So, please inquire about pricing specific to your group.
REFERRALS:
• Current clients will receive a discount of 15% of the monthly fee for each new client that the current client refers.
• The discount will be applied to the current client after the new client has been active for one month at the regular price and will continue for as long as both the new client and current client are active.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching voice lessons while still attending university. I was in a very popular jazz choir that held auditions every year for new members. So, many of my fellow students would consult with me about best preparing for their upcoming audition. From there, I began to retain regular clients and later began working for the DC Music Center, which supplied low-cost, private music lessons for those who may not otherwise be able to afford them.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with adults and children of all ages and experience levels, including hobbyists, professionals, celebrities, and those with disabilities.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
The first event that comes to mind is one where I was conducting a Vocal Coaching clinic. Of course, we discussed the technical basics of singing, but we also discussed how to choose a vocal coach. It seemed I had answered a question that many of them didn't even know they had, as I witnessed their shoulders relax and them breathing a sigh of relief. We talked about when I wasted money and what I learned from that, plus what I gained from having a vocal coach that was right for me.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Know your goals. What are your intentions for taking voice lessons? What do you want to achieve for yourself, learn about yourself, or prove to yourself?
Be honest with yourself (not judgemental of yourself). What is your level of commitment? Are you emotionally prepared to receive constructive criticism with grace and humility? Can you be fully present for the entire voice lesson?
Ask questions.
Be prepared; do your homework.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Who am I?
How can the instructor support me in being the highest expression of myself?
Am I open to the various potential manifestations of that support (praise, critique, advice, etc.)?
Am I willing to do the necessary work and see the processes through?
