MarKay tailors each lesson to what my needs/skills are. She teaches the logic behind the methods, and is a very energetic and positive person to be around. She gave me the greatest piece of advice, too...that I am allowed to make mistakes. And she explains how to fix them or restart. That takes so much pressure off of me!

She is extremely knowledgeable about everything that has to do with sewing. She gives historical information that leaves you with a fresh perspective about learning to sew and she is very passionate about ensuring her student learns exactly what they need for their own specific goals. I love learning to sew with Mrs. Appel, especially how confident I feel now about making clothes for myself. Wonderful experience.

    Frequently asked questions

I have designed small projects that expose a new sewing student to a variety of techniques, to get a solid foundation in machine and hand sewing. I provide all the materials and tools needed to get started. My students gain confidence as they build skills, and have fun and useful items to show their progress. When the student is ready, we tackle larger projects. My students are taught the fundamentals of sewing and fabrics, not just how to follow a pattern.

I learned to sew as a child, and have added to my skills through self-teaching. I love the technology of textiles, so I incorporate some of the history and science of fabrics into my lessons. I've been teaching beginning sewists for several years, and can teach anyone, from timid beginner to someone needing a refresher lesson.

Pricing for lessons in my student's home are $55.00 per 90 minute session, within 10 miles of 30067, with a 10% discount for a prepaid series of six lessons. g For beginners, six sessions is a great number to start with, and will let you know if this is a hobby you truly enjoy. I bring all tools and materials for the initial projects, including a sewing machine, if needed. Afterward, we can decide together if you want more lessons, and can customize these lessons to meet your individual sewing goals.

I must always be making something, so I volunteered at Scouts and Sunday School to help with costumes (and sets and props), which led to teaching my friends' kids sewing, art and crafting. Then I worked as an after-school and camp instructor for 5 years, teaching drawing and crafts. Currently, I teach art, art history or sewing at two private schools and a homeschool co-op.
