Understand their background in the water.  Then understand and set realistic expectations for the students goals.  Next, begin lessons and taylor the course based on each students individual strengths and weaknesses.  

Everyone is so radically different that I feel the need to constantly tailor and modify the basic course work.  

I work with the British Swim School and they put all instructors through a very tough training and testing course before letting their coaches get their own students.  Not everyone makes the cut!

Our pricing is based on location. Typically $23-25/group lesson and $55 for Private.  Discounted private lessons for kids with special abilities.  Large groups like summer camps that want to add swimming to their activities or residential communities that want to add swimming as a service, I can custom design a price for any size group.

I started off in office work and out of necessity, had to learn how to teach.  Now I love it!  I find I can relate since I went through BSS's Adult swim program years ago.  It really helps adults and kids because I've been there recently!

Set realistic goals and talk openly and honestly with your coach. 

Ask questions about playtime, structure of classes, and aids they the organization uses.

Ensure you are working with a professional organization or coach and request to undestand the criteria around the goals and levels.  

Make sure they are insured.  

Kids:

What are the goals you have for your child?

Does your child have fear of water or any special ability? 

What kind of environment will your child do best in?

Swimming lessons are a developmental process that takes time to perfect like any other sport.  Do you have a timeline?

Adults:

What are your individual goals?  Any past experiences which would harbor anxiety? Will you be practicing in between lessons to maximize your learning?  Do you have an event you are training for and if so make sure to talk to an instructor about the goals.
