About
My studio offers small group and private lessons in several areas of art. Each offering is planned around offering new experiences to people that enjoy being creative. I'm not looking to make you the next Picasso but to encourage your abilities to become more creative. I believe that everyone has an artist living within and it is my job to help you find it and enjoy it. In my private lessons each student has an individual program set for them that will help them explore thier interests and talents. ( Yes everyone has Talent!) My studio is open Tuesday thur Thursday.
I am a retired art teacher and I love to create. My work varies I love mosaics and fused glass but, I draw and paint as well. My greatest love is sharing this creativity others adult and children alike. My greatest joy is seeing some one else amazed by thier own creativity. Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first step is to get to know the student, explore what interest them and what they want from the lessons. Start with what they want to improve on or start to learn. An open line of communication makes everything easier and more fun. I use the same approach when working with adults we start with your interests and then apply the proper techniques and mediums that will make you successful in your artistic endeavors.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelors of Art from Kansas University and A Master in Education from Webster University. I taught for twenty years at Roesland Elementary as a K-6th art teacher. I also taught Summer enrichments for grades 1 through 5 for 5 summers. Teaching has always been my love and passion. Now being able to do it on a smaller more intimate groups and in broader age groups I am really enjoying sharing this passion. I really enjoy being able to getting to know people on a more personal level it makes the artistic process more personal.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I have a $25.00 per hour fee for private lessons. In my lessons we will explore general drawing skills and then move into color using your medium preference. We can explore many areas but usually it's best to pick one medium, I teach color pencils, oil painting acrylic painting and watercolor as well as mix media processs. You will provide your own supplies and we will discuss these Needs prior to the first lesson. I will supplement with some supplies as having everything when you start out is difficult. This way you can add to your supply needs slowly.
How did you get started teaching?
My love of teaching started in Highschool when I was an assistant in my favorite art teachers classroom. After being his teaching assistance during my senior year he asked me if I had ever thought of being a teacher. He told me I was a natural. It was not something I had considered as I had been offered a job at Hallmark after graduation. This sent me to college to pursue a path that became a passion.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all ages from pre school to adult. I love sharing my knowledge and encouraging you to find your inner artist.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently I had a student that always thought their work was below average when in reality they were amazing. They walked in and saw thier work which was on the table ready for them, and the comment was that's better than I remember. These moments bring joy to my heart. I call them ah ha moments. This is why I truly believe that the student needs to be the driving force in lessons if they are not excited about the subject and lesson the will not be excited about coming and continuing. This applies to all ages😀
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher you feel comfortable with, because art should always be FUN. Not stressful or painful!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What do you want to achieve with these lessons?
What are your expectations and be honest about those with the teacher.?
Don't have unrealistic goals and by all means have fun!
