Umi Art Lessons
About
I offer virtual studio art lessons for people of all ages. Our lessons start at 2hours per session and focus on filling sketchbooks with practice hours and building portfolios.
My course is for anyone from a young person who loves to color and wants to learn to draw their own lines to adults who want to practice alternative ways to engage with the those lines from childhood. I love a challenge, so if you or someone you know believes they "can't" draw, send them my way. And if y'all want to polish up on your imagination and creativity, please sign up and let's get to work!
I believe that art is 80% the way I look at the world and it pleases me to show others just how much changing the way they see will improve their skills, especially those who believe they can't do it! It's wonderful to watch students' styles evolve during the process. Their uniqe lenses and dedication is what it's all about!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My lessons are custom made for my students and I plan the lessons around a 3-5 month syllabus, forming exercises, projects, and lessons around preassessed goals the student aims to achieve within the timeline.
I treat my classes like semesters and this practice helps to track the student's progress as well as establish a consistent routine of practicing their craft.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm a Louisiana artist, based in New Orleans, and I have over 10 years of experience as a gallery and art market artist, I've served as an art curator for Ashé Cultural Arts Center, I'm a member of Ashé Cultural Arts Center's Side-by-Side Artist cohort, and I've been an independent teaching artist with Young Audiences of Louisiana, Community Works, and Art Camp 504. I have 7 murals across the city of New Orleans and they're inside of elementary schools, community centers, coffee shops, and private homes.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I offer to meet 1-3 days a week for 3-5 months. This Bundle Plan helps me learn what my student needs and allows me to chart time for them to reach their goals. My exercise routines help build disciple and routine into the student's schedule and I serve as an accountability partner for their growth.

How did you get started teaching?
It started from hearing people tell me, "I could never do that," or "I wish I could draw." When I hear those ideas, I feel called to show them differently and I enjoy proving them wrong. With hard work truly comes great reward.
What types of students have you worked with?
Children 4-6, 7-12, and 13-22. I've worked as a teaching artist for elementary and middle school summer and after school programs as well as privately for adult clients.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently vended and painted live at the Ogden Museum in New Orleans and it was such a delight and an honor. It felt so affirming to see how much joy my art brought to people.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Be clear about what you want to learn. Make precise and S.M.A.R.T Goals when it comes to working together long term. This will help you be able to keep track and create a rhythm that fits with your lifestyle.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What medium do you want to focus on during our time together? (Try and stick to one for at least one full month before transitioning to something new)
How big or small do you want your projects to be?
