Joel Chavarria Music Lessons
About
I have been practicing and studying music for over 16 years, learning the ins and outs of multiple instruments and various genres of music. I've recorded albums and toured with a heavy metal band and a reggae band, studied jazz and classical privately and in college, composed jazz tunes and written acoustic guitar songs + lyrics, and taught lessons in every instrument I know how to play: bass, guitar, drums, piano, and hand percussion.
My holistic approach to music translates well when I teach my students, as it expands their conception of their instruments, their favorite styles of music, and their reasons for playing music in the first place.
I love sharing the discoveries and moments that have helped me hear and feel music in new ways. The process of transmitting these aspects of music - ear training, internal practice, constructing practice routines, reading music, improvisation - is one of the more rewarding parts of teaching. Each student is an individual who learns best on his or her own terms, and every session is a chance to see a student more clearly and help him/her advance more efficiently.
