Frequently asked questions

Our first most important thing we do is make sure a new student feels safe and comfortable. We then give them an easy still life to paint that gives a lot of info about the science of light, yet can be finished in an hour so that they can see that they in fact can succeed at painting.

we are a family run business. My education in in child development with 35 years of teaching young children. My husband's degree is in fine art from Boston University. He has 24 years teaching experience. Our assistant teachers are graduates of fine art.

I was teaching nursery school when I was approached by a parent to help her two older children who were dyslexic, learn how to paint.  The success was such that word got out and we integrated non learning challenged children into our program.

We have worked with kids from all walks of life. Some have had learning challenges while others were top of their classes in school. We have also taken in kids in crisis.  Acorn is an all inclusive environment

I had 17 kids painting landscapes at Salem Willows over the summer. After we cleaned up and had some snack the kids asked if they could go on to the beach to hunt for sea glass. I said sure, and watched as all 17 worked together and pooled what they found. They were discussing the rarity of each one and imagining from where it came. It was a perfect example of the " community" that Acorn is.

The most important thing in finding a teacher for your child is that they care for the emotional and physical well being of their students. The second would be to look at that teachers artwork. If you like it then it's the start of a good fit.  The last would be to look at their past students and their own successes

that depends on the age. If they are in high school and need to augment a portfolio for college then they need to bring in examples of their work if they have it. From there together the student and teacher will devise a plan based on time allotted until graduation and the students strengths and what areas need work.
