About
I love music, children and teaching! My goal is to help every student love making music and grow through piano study, for a lifetime of pleasure. I accept students age 5 and up, and include a variety of music (Classical, modern, church, as desired), ear training and performance opportunities. I also include theory training so students understand what they're learning and can become independent musicians as they progress. I dedicate myself to finding just the right music for every student to be happy and keep improving.
I hold a Music degree with Piano Pedagogy emphasis from Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia. I'm a long-standing member of Music Teachers National Association, Maryland State, and Frederick County Music Teachers' organizations (past president).
I have 35 years experience with students who are Beginners to advanced; children as well as adults. Lessons and repertoire are individualized for each student’s interests and capabilities. Students need an acoustic piano or keyboard with weighted keys to succeed.
Student Opportunities: Students may participate in several events every year, including studio recitals, FCMTA festivals (if local), and Maryland State Music Teachers Association events. Preparation for performing at school, church, and community events is provided.
I really enjoy helping every student grow on their individual musical journey, and learn to love playing music especially suited to their interests and talents. I've had many students study 8-10 years, from beginners to accomplished musicians who can enjoy music their whole lives.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I interview prospective students/parents to be sure we are a good fit. I talk with students to discover their interests, level, and experience. Parents' expectations, support and desires are taken into account before deciding on materials. An acoustic piano or quality digital with weighted keys are a must for successful study.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a Music degree with a specialty in Piano Pedagogy from Shenandoah Conservatory (now University). I have 35 years experience working with a wide variety of students, and various positions in music teachers organizations. I'm also committed to continuing professional development and constantly exploring new music and learning theories.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I offer 45 minute lessons and one hour lessons on a weekly basis. Every student receives 38 lessons from September through June, plus two studio recitals and classes. Summer lessons are optional.
How did you get started teaching?
I majored in piano teaching in college, graduating in 1985 and having a private studio ever since.
What types of students have you worked with?
Children and adults, from beginners through early advanced levels, some with learning differences.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I held online Concerts over Zoom this past year, with all students performing multiple pieces, and family and friends from around the country joining in to applaud students' musical growth. Parents were very appreciative, and students enjoyed getting to hear others play.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Contact several teachers and spend time finding a good fit for you and/or your child. This is extra important in any one-on-one situation. Discuss expectations, requirements, and experience so you're both on the same page. Also be open with the teacher so they know about any learning issues and can adapt approach/materials to student needs appropriately.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What they want out of lessons! Types of music, whether they can commit to a reasonable amount of practice time* so they progress and don't get frustrated, what other after school/work commitments they have, long term goals (if any).
*younger students will need parental supervision or assistance during daily practice.
