About
Hello, I'm Sarah! I come from a musical family, and now I have been teaching for 15 years (2006). I graduated from Kuyper College with a BS in Music and Worship in 2008, have directed worship teams at churches, kids bands, provided piano and vocals for weddings, funerals, and events, and also have played and recorded with various folk bands as well as a solo EP. I was classically trained but also incorporate chords and improv into my playing. I began teaching when parents asked me to teach their children, and I discovered that I enjoyed working side by side with children and adults, helping them pursue various musical goals.
When I teach, I not only pass on basic skill and technique but I learn the learning style and musical tastes and capitalize on those strengths. I was teaching a highschool student once but was only focusing on reading staff music. She was an auditory learner, and despite practicing, became frustrated only reading music. When I incorporated listening, it was a game changer. I now look for any ways I can fully teach music, while still challenging areas that aren't as natural (ie encouraging note reading if the student excels in playing by ear). I always ask someone their favorite songs and incorpate these into regular lessons. I live for those "ah-ha" moments - when something makes sense, a favorite song is mastered, regular practice pays off, or an event was made better by your musical presence.
