About

Hello!

Do you want to play the violin or viola but didn't know where to start?

Played years ago and are ready to pick it up again and reach your fullest potential?

Tried to learn on your own only to get stuck?

I'm here to help you. My focus is helping adults and teens reach their musical goals. You've probably spent some time thinking about what and why you want to play a string instrument, and I value that self-knowledge and eagerness in my students.

Over my 15 years of experience teaching violin and viola, I've come to realize that the biggest hurdles to learning are not talent or age, but sustaining motivation, environment, structure, and the ability to see progress.

I am developing a new system that will help you see your progress and stay motivated. I will work with you to set up an environment that makes practicing easy and gets you inspired. And I will give you a structure for your practice time so that you always know what to do and how to practice effectively.

My most extensive training is in classical music, which is a great foundation for all students. I received my Bachelors in Violin Performance from the University of Michigan School of Music, rated one of the top ten music schools in the US, and subsequently took Suzuki teacher training at the PhoenixPhest! in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

However, there are a growing number of string players branching out in rock, jazz, and electronic music (including myself!), and I think it's important for students to hear and be able to explore all the possiblities available to them. I have been an orchestral musician, played in bands, and joined in on fiddle jams at the local pub. Whether you want to play Beethoven, Irish fiddle, or Game of Thrones I want to help you learn the music you love.

I enjoy helping students experience music more deeply, and helping them develop this outlet to express their emotion and creativity.

I also find that I learn a lot from my students and get inspired by their projects and interests as well - it's a cycle of positive reinforcement that keeps me motivated.

I like to have a conversation over the phone to learn a little bit more about what you hope to get out of lessons and to determine if I'm the best fit for you as a teacher.  If I think I can help you, I'll offer a free trial lesson so we can see how we'd work together, and we can discuss the best path forward from there.
