Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first lesson will involve an assessment to see which level the student is currently. We then discuss during this time what the goals are with the lesson(s) and how they see that happening. I am usually able to make an assessment and have my client accomplish some improvement that day.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing tennis since the age of 9 and that includes tournaments, high school team and college. I currently have a certification with the Professional Tennis Registry(PTR). I have had previous certifications with the USPTA, Cardio Tennis and was a certified personal trainer-NASM. I also had a variety of fitness certifications. I have been teaching tennis to children and adults for many years and at all levels.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I usually charge $40.00/ per hour. This is a fair market rate if one checks with clubs and sites in the area. If there are more students-I have a group rate depending upon the number of people but it would usually mean that the rate per person goes down but the overall is a bit higher. I do offer packages:
1= $40.00 5= $180.00 10 = $360.00
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching tennis to be more involved with the people I was meeting throughout my playing. I am passionate about the game and believe that everyone would enjoy the sport. It is the sport of a lifetime and I believe that I have many experiences that I can share with clients that may help them enjoy and improve.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught tennis to children from the age of 3 up to adults that were over 70. Each age group has it's own challenges and rewards. I believe that although the game can be difficult one should enjoy the process and have fun learning.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I have some current clients that are girls in high school. I really like seeing them play on their teams. Although tennis is an individual sport the opportunity to play the sport in a team setting teaches many life lessons.
I also think the current movie about Billie Jean King is a must see. She is truly a great person and has devoted her life to creating opportunities for many people.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The best advice I can give is to find someone that loves the game and the art of teaching. If you look forward to going to see this person it will go a long way to improving. Your instructor should always teach with positive rewards and encouragement. And if it isn't working for you don't feel bad. It is what is best for you that is important.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are you hoping to get out of a private lesson?
Be specific as possible about what area you are interested in learning about first.
Will the schedules work for both parties.
