About
We run small classes with multiple instructors, to maintain a small student to teacher ratio. This helps us differentiate instruction for different learning styles, and work with the individual one-on-one as needed. We keep a light, silly, family atmosphere while being serious about teaching high quality martial arts for focus, self-defense, fitness, and character building. This is a female-owned martial arts school with multiple board certified black stripe instructors, as well as trainee and junior instructors, and a leadership program available for advanced students.

The sense of purpose and accomplishment when I see students growing in ways that will serve them their entire lives, building leadership skills, emotional skills, self-defense skills... Words can't describe how awesome it is to be able to help people with all that!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
New students typically try a free class with us, no strings, to meet the instructors and other students, and get a feel for our program. They may then join in and get underway learning beginning curriculum!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Ms. Johnson, owner of Blue Ridge TKD, is deeply passionate about all that the martial arts can do for a person, inside and out, and brings that to life in her school. She holds the rank of 3rd degree high senior black belt in taekwondo, and is a certified instructor with the American Taekwondo Foundation.
Mr. Jenkins, another certified instructor at BRTKD, holds a 4th degree senior black belt in taekwondo.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
We have options for 3 classes/week, 1 class/week for special circumstances, and also provide family discounts.
How did you get started teaching?
Teaching became a natural, fulfilling extension of my own taekwondo practice, so I decided through time to open Blue Ridge TKD to serve the community and be able to facilitate self-defense seminars frequently.
What types of students have you worked with?
We work with students 4 through adult, and our teaching is individualized to each student. You have curriculum at each belt level, but the pacing is different for everyone.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Always check it out in person before jumping in, and ask about their organization (make sure it's a large, respected, accredited organization). Bottom line, do a gut check and make sure it feels like a safe, positive environment, wherever you go.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Ask about any accommodations you may need for physical or emotional issues, so that your instructor can best serve your needs. Make sure you understand that martial arts is a longer term commitment, to extract all the amazing benefits from the experience.
