Maker-Shops

About

I am excited to offer maker-shops to your child! I love art, learning, exploring and trying new things. I am excited to bring creativity, art and movement to kids through my classes. Most recently I have offered a series of summer and winter art classes for kids ages 7-10 and adults with developmental disabilities. I have taken studio art classes, and drama classes throughout my life and minored in studio art in college. I have experience coordinating and leading camps for children ages 6-17. I am married to Rudy and we have two boys who I love to dream and create with!

My Teaching PhilosophyI think setting the tone of a welcoming and mistake-embracing team atmosphere in the class is important. Great teachers provide both support and a challenge when teaching. I have a philosophy that I share at the beginning of every session. First, that there is no negative talk about our art or ideas or others in the class. Second that mistakes are cool and can always be turned into something else or an chance to learn something about a technique. And third, that ANYTHING can be art.

My two girls (ages 7 and 9) attended Sarahs art camp this past summer and absolutely loved it! They enjoyed learning about different artists, creating their own pieces of art and experiencing opportunities to do art in new ways (in a garden, using recycled materials or painting a still life). Sarahs love for art is shown in how she invests in each child to explore, enjoy and experience creativity on a new level!

My 7 year old son attended a camp facilitated by Sarah this summer. Not only did he thoroughly enjoy the camp experience but he has continued to build upon the ideals shared by Sarah in the camp setting. Sarah relates well to children of any age and her genuine excitement and love of art comes through in her interactions. Her enthusiasm is contagious and she encourages children to think creatively without fear of failure.

Sarah taught classes for us at The Exceptional Foundation of Charlotte this summer. Her classes were wonderful and everyone enjoyed the projects we worked on. She was especially skilled at making sure that everyone was able to have a positive art experience no matter what their skill level was.

My 7 year old daughter attended Sarah’s camp last summer... Ms.Hayden was able to incorporate the teaching of new & traditional art skills while using different art media, local history, science and physical activity into a camp that the children truly enjoyed... passionate is a word that comes to mind when I think of Sarah... I highly recommend Sarah’s camps and can’t wait for next summer!

Frequently asked questions

As students register for my classes, I follow up with their parents typically via email to send reminders for the class, and answer any questions. I get to know each student in class to see their comfort level and ability as well as help them get to know others in the class.
