About this pro

I have decades of experience.  My students include Jim Stafford and Betty Weider.  I was a studio musician in Hollywood and played with Tina Turner and Ray Charles.

Reading music is optional.  I teach with and without reading.  However if someone wants to learn to read music I will teach them.  My service stands out because my own playing is at a professional level, and I'm able to share the best professional quality techniques and ideas with my students.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

We talk about the genre the student wants to learn.  The student plays for me a little so I can understand their needs and goals.   Then we get right to work!  I'm really good at figuring out how to get the student from here to where they want to be quickly and easily.  My lessons sometimes go over time because we get so enthusiastic and productive. (If they do go over, the extra time  is free of charge, because I love my work.)  I write examples and the student takes note.  If we're not using notes, I have a shorthand easy to understand way of jotting down chords and which keys to play.  Fingering is sometimes important, and sometimes it's ok with me for the student to just use the fingering they are used to or the fingering that is the most comfortable.  The place where fingering is really important though, is in classical music.  There, I have to be a little stricter.  I give an assignment on what we went over, and I expect the student to practice a little each day if possible and master the material we covered by the next lesson, so we can move forward and make progress quickly.  Added:  Now that we are in a quarantine situation, I'm only teaching online or on the phone.  Still effective though!
