Simply Melissy Sewing Lessons
About
I have a curriculum of three projects to start for new students. First we will make a draw string bag, then a skirt, and then a stuffed animal. These three projects will take 3-5 one-hour lessons and provide an excellent foundation for using your sewing machine. You'll feel comfortable with some basic techniques and control, and be ready to move on to something more fun!
After that, we can sew whatever you want. Clothes, costumes, curtains, toys, bags... I've done it all and would love to help you do them too!
I love working with kids and adults. I love the sense of confidence it instills in people, and the excitement of a project finished.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We start with three basic projects to become comfortable with your sewing machine. After that, we work on whatever the student likes, at their own pace.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been sewing for 19 years. I teach fashion design at Staten Island Dance and Arts Center. I have over 30 students after 8 through adult. I have students who have gotten into FIT and who have made tons of clothes that they wear on a daily basis.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I generally charge $40 an hour, but price may vary if you are located in New Jersey or Brooklyn.
What's great about my pricing scheme is if you want to have a small group lesson, or have two kids who want to sew, the cost is per hour, not per person!
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching in college. I began to love it so much that I have managed to grow it into my full time job while I am in graduate school to become a high school teacher.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students ages eight through adult. I have experience with students with special needs, including learning disabilities, autism, and ADHD.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Every June my studio has a runway show. All of my students (from the studio) work for 9 weeks to make a head to toe look. Every year it almost brings tears to my eyes when I think about how amazing they all are! The next event is this June and I cannot wait!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Ask the teacher to bring their sewing machine for the first lesson, to make sure you like it. If you want to continue, buy one right away so you can practice! And ask your teacher what kind she reccomends.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Think about what you want to sew, and what your goals are. I would approach a teenager looking to go to FIT differently from a new grandma looking to make baby clothes.
