My teaching approach: Jesus Mansilla, owner and teacher at Jersey City Guitar Lessons, has a Bachelor's degree in Classical Guitar Performance and an Associates degree in Audio Engineering. Jesus has been teaching guitar and music for nearly a decade to students of all ages and skill levels. On weekends I start at 10am until 4pm. Guitar Techniques: Lead guitar, Fingerstyle, Performance, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following: The first lesson is totally dependent on the student's prior history with the guitar and music in general. New students begin with fundamental theory and fingering lessons. Those with prior experience begin lessons to fill in the gaps in their technique or to continue in their studies. When assessing a student's current playing level I look for proper posture, proper fingering on both hands, if they keep a steady beat, sloppiness in slurs, volume, etc. I first try to correct any current gaps and then continue with new material. A guitar lesson with me might entail the following: after learning fundamentals in both hand technique and theory, I like to use the student's favorite songs as learning guides to continue their studies. The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following: Motivation is the best asset a new student can have. With this, the sky is the limit in terms of their progression.
