About

Hello!

My name is Hiyasmine Gaskins (AKA ArtisticAfro), a fine artist, muralist, and all around multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Jersey City, NJ. I have studied Fine Art at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, New Jersey City University, and Florence University of the Arts in Florence, Italy. My work mainly focuses on ideologies around self awareness, the act of transcending one’s being, and the beauty of being in the present. I use self portraits to experiment with new ways of displaying my personal growth, using a unique mixed media style. In the words of the artist Frida Kahlo “ I paint self portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.”

Since 2016, I have assisted several prolific artists, such as Distort, BK Foxx, and Queen Andrea, through the Jersey City Mural Program and mural programs in New York City. My mentors, co-workers, and I teach young artists how to create murals during the Jersey City Summer Youth Mural Program. In the classroom, the students, my instructors, and colleagues brainstorm and create together a final design that expresses each student's artwork under one theme. Through working this job and other experiences, I have attained the skills to help others learn how to release their inner visions.

To see more of my works and join me in my art journey, follow me on INSTAGRAM @artisticafro. Enjoy!

I enjoy being willing to learn something new every time I create. I could draw 1,000 flowers and none of them would have the exact same approach.

    Frequently asked questions

I ask the student what got them interested in what they want to learn and their long & short-term goals. Next, I quickly visually demonstrate what today's class will be. Then, we get into creating for 45-50 minutes. Take a 15 minute break to reflect on the student's process. The session continues for as long as booked.

I have worked with students ages 12-22 who expressed their desires to explore their creativity.

In November 2019, the Jersey City Mural Program hosted an art exhibition for the mural we completed the past summer. Everyone who was a part of the mural's creation was invited to share their story with our friends, families, and community. The exhibition was the first art show for a lot of my students. Not only did they get to exhibit their art, but they were also featured in a short film about the mural, spoke on stage about how much they appreciated the program, and some of them even sold their pieces! Such a great experience to have as a young artist.

Are you willing to work hard to be good at said skill?
