The Rock Underground offers students the opportunity to not only take lessons, but to join and rehearse with a band and play live shows. We teach music, but we develop leaders. That is the core of why The Rock Underground is unique. Music, especially in a group setting, is a great opportunity for students to intrinsically learn and experience the benefits of teamwork, social skills, leadership skills, development of focus, accountability and reliability. The soft skills that are developed through this school's programs are true complements to what's not explicitly learned in all school settings. Trust, Discipline, and Respect are the 3 pillars through which everything that's learned is funneled.
All of our teachers are accomplished musicians with music degrees, including instructors with experience in writing music for television and advertising, as Finalists on NBC's the Voice, performing on off-broadway shows, or with extensive live music experience.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
For a brand new student, we offer Free 30-minute Trial Lessons. Often young students might be drawn to music but aren't sure what instrument feels right to them. The trial lesson is the perfect opportunity to explore 1 or 2 instruments, meet the instructor and get a sense of what the lesson process is like. Over the course of their tuition, students are trained in instrument fundamentals, instrument and/or vocal technique, performance technique, music theory, practice strategies, and beyond.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Our instructors have a variety of education and experiential backgrounds. From our music director having written music for television and created sounds shipped on over a billion Android phones, to vocal instructors as off-broadway performers and Top-20 Finalist on The Voice, to other instrumental instructors with experience in Audio recording and sound production for Film as well as touring experience. All instructors have a music degree, ranging from composition and performance to music education and audio production.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons are weekly for either 45-minutes (recommended 9 or above) or 30-minutes (recommended 8 or below). Tuition for weekly 45-minute lessons is $195/month. Tuition for weekly 30-minute lessons is $145/month. Our performance ensemble is $195/month and consists of weekly 90-minute group rehearsals and an end-of-season live show.
Substantial Discounts are available for enrolling multiple family members or for enrolling in multiple programs (e.g. Lessons + Performance is discounted $100)
How did you get started teaching?
Our instructors have gotten started teaching through many different ways. At the core of it, our instructors have a true passion for spreading their knowledge and love of music, so many explored private instruction first, some with group classes including in different trades such as dance or acting, or some in school settings. Our diversity allows for a rich and fulfilling education with knowledge-shares and contributions from all team members.
What types of students have you worked with?
We have students ranging from age 4 to age 88! We have students with all ranges of personality, from shy to extroverted and everything in between. We work well with students with learning disabilities, and have great comfort teaching adult beginners as well as experienced youth. At the core of it, we emphasize respect towards any student walking through our doors.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Don't think about where you hope to be in 2 years. Focus on your love for learning, playing and practicing, and strive for nothing more than consistent improvement and enjoyment in the journey. With this, you will always push beyond what you think you are capable of.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1) Why do you want to play (or sing) music? What are your aspirations? Just for fun? To join a Band? Eventually have a career in music?
2) What are your expectations about taking lessons or joining an ensemble/band?
3) How often are you available to play and practice? 30 minute a day? an hour a day? Twice per week? Only during lesson?
