Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Getting to know a student first is key; learning more and more how they think, how they learn, how to pique their interest in music, and what they are really looking for in music. As that is established, then real progress can happen.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have degrees in violin performance and education, taught for 7 years in the public schools, performed solos with orchestras, served as concertmaster and strings coach for community orchestras, and served as head youth orchestra director.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge a minimum of $60 per 50 minute lesson, at my home. I don't travel to a client's home except by special arrangement.
How did you get started teaching?
My degrees are from 1979 and 1980 and I taught public schools after that. I currently am a computer scientist and teach privately only. I am lifetime certificated educator in the state of Washington and ASTA member.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught students of all levels, 4th grade to adult.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Try it and see! If you like the teacher, feel good at the end of the lesson, feel like you really learned something and are looking forward to your next lesson, then you really have something.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What is the student looking for? To be a great soloist? To just have fun with music? To move ahead in their orchestra? Everybody is different. But students already have thought this through and will know a good teacher when they find him or her.
