About

My teaching approach: I aim to create a synergy with the student so that we can each grow and expand through our lessons together. I respect that each individual has his or her own path and therefore I try to create the direction of the lessons through mutual participation When a student lacks direction, then of course I will choose what I feel to be the best direction to go in at that time.

My influences are: From Metallica and Iron Maiden, to Billy Joel & the Cure. I used to listen to a lot of heavy metal. I've also listened to and learned from a lot of folk artists such as Simon & Grafunkel and Jim Croce.

I was also classically trained a bit, so I am influenced by classical guitar as well as classical music - Beethoven, Bach, Tarrega, Brouwer. I was also trained in jazz theory and have several years playing experience in jazz bands.

My guitar lessons take place in: The teacher's studio only or on Skype/GChat.

Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours: Monday: 10am - 9pm Tuesday: 10am - 9pm Wed: 10am - 12noon Thurs: 10am - 12noon

Guitar Techniques: Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Fingerstyle, Vocal Accompaniment, Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following: For a beginner, I tend to ease the into it. First we talk about the guitar, why they are interested in playing and then I have them play some open strings. Next we will learn some very simple but cool songs on one string.

Assessing a player's ability is a bit more relevant for intermediate / advanced students. In which case, I will have them play for me and generally talk to them with at a musically high level. Through observing their playing and having music-related dialogue I can learn a lot about where they are at and where they need to go to reach their desired goals.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following: For beginners I tend to start with the basics of the guitar and recommend working from my book "Single String Songs Vol.1". Very quickly we are playing a simple tune. Sometimes a 1st lesson will cover 3 short melodies!

For intermediate / advanced players I tend to delve into their background and have them play for me a bit. I may play for them if it is appropriate. We create a general game plan and then take it from there. These lessons may cover scales, theory, harmony, and the finer points of playing the guitar.

I strongly believe in personal connection and having a sense of humor. :) The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following: Someone who is passionate about learning. Open-minded. Interested in growing not only as a guitarist but as a person. Someone who is busy (with little free time), or someone with time on their hands.

Witnessing the growth of the student both musically and personally over time. Being able to share my skills, talents and passion with others. Helping people discover their own inner gifts and passion.
