About

My name is Nick, and I am a guitarist and composer, originally hailing from Australia! I have lived in New York for three years now, and am excited to continue my passion for music and educating! Though I love to perform and compose, I have also spent eight years teaching and tutoring within music; with a focus on guitar (beginner to advanced, any level!), music theory and composition. I am fond of many different types of music - I grew up with classic rock and pop music but jazz and improvised music is my primary love and focus.

I am acutely aware of the importance educators had on my development as a musician and artist, without which I wouldn't be where I am today. Therefore I feel it is a responsibility, and a great one at that, to continue in this tradition. The arts are often sadly neglected in mainstream education - a true disservice to our development as individuals and members of the greater society in my opinion. I hope to be a proponent of change in this way.

I completed a Bachelor of Music (Performance) in 2016 at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, in my hometown of Adelaide, South Australia. In 2019, I graduated from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music's Masters of Music (Jazz Arts) program.

I have taught in many institutions, both in New York and my native Australia. I have had experience in music centers, elementary and high schools, and colleges - providing me with a broad grasp of successful ways of teaching students of widely varying age groups, levels and passions.

My first objective with any student is to find what they love about music, and what they want to acheive. From there I can tailor the lessons and materials to best fit the student.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. I would love to discuss with you further, on how I can best help you achieve whatever musical goal you might have!

Thanks,

-Nick

To begin generally - I love music. Performing brings me an incredible amount of joy - though, like many of my students, at my core I am a fan of music. This allows for a immediate connection with the student that provides a much easier passing of knowledge and information.

The concept that after even one lesson with me, students could enrich their lives and possibly the lives of others, is very important to me.

I have had students go on to study music at a college level, begin careers in music performance/composition. However those that may even move on to other professions, can often still hold music to be important to them, and that makes me happy too.

Frequently asked questions

I begin with simply inquiring what intrigues the student about music, specifically. This could be the instrument, a song, an artist - anything! Finding where the interest/passion lies first is the most important step.

From there, I assess what their technical grasp of the instrument or theory might be. These things can often be varied or atypical (For example, some students may have a trained ear, but limited theoretical understanding). This step in the process allows me as the teacher to begin to outline a pathway for the student to acheive goals that closely align with their passion/interest.
