About

I can help you make this most fascinating and mysterious instrument your own! When you feel "at home" with the guitar, you practice more, learn more easily, and have more fun.

I have played guitar from the age of 8; I also play jazz and orchestral double bass. The instruments I teach include acoustic and electric guitar, double bass, electric bass and ukulele. I studied music at Smith College, and most recently studied guitar with legendary jazz player Gene Bertoncini. My greatest influences are: (Jazz) Charlie Christian, Gene Bertoncini, Jim Hall, Joao Gilberto. (Rock) Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page. (Blues) B.B. King, Muddy Waters. (Bass) Ray Brown, Larry Grenadier, John Clayton.

My guitar lessons take place online via FaceTime, Skype or Zoom; in-person lessons are also available. I teach on weekdays from 11 am to 7 pm. I teach the following guitar techniques: Lead and rhythm guitar, Fingerstyle, Vocal Accompaniment, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing.

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following: if you have had lessons before, I may ask you to play a piece or song you know. If you are new to the guitar, I will ask: What music do you listen to and love? Have you ever played another instrument? Do you sing and want to accompany your voice with the guitar? Once I have a sense of what you most want to learn, we can get right to work and I can give you the supporting materials (chord diagrams, sheet music, exercises/etudes) you need.

Beginning-level lessons help you find easy ways to form and change chords efficiently, play rhythms with confidence, learn songs you like, and understand how chords work together using familiar examples. Intermediate lessons may involve soloing and improvisation, mastering the higher positions on the fingerboard, building a repertory of songs/pieces, or learning to arrange and compose music. From the start, I promote learning by ear; while I encourage students to learn to read music, it is optional.

I love it when a student is self-directed, curious, and motivated to listen to a lot of music!

I love learning the music that my students bring to me - it keeps me learning along with them! I have loved teaching special-needs and neurodivergent children, which has led me to develop flexibility and a wide range of teaching approaches. I also enjoy teaching retired adults - many who were beginners are now playing happily. Trust me, it is never too late to begin!
