How did you get started teaching?
Initially I taught at a music store in the Bronx while i was studying at Manhattan School of Music. Later, I was asked to start music groups at La Hermosa Church.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with children age 11 through young adults in their 20s.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Attending a performance of Brahms Symphony No. 2 by the San Francisco Symphony. The final 10 minutes are my favorite 10 minutes of music. Such power and inspiration.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Keep an open mind. Be prepared to keep a journal to summarize what your teacher imparts at each lesson. It pays off later on.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are my goals? What do I hope to obtain by studying with a teacher? If I play already, what do I need to work on? Articulation? Tone production? Scales? What about reeds, and mouthpieces?
