About

I help students build confidence and provide the tools and strategies towards this end. I am organic in my approach and treat each individual as a kind of puzzle to be figured out. What will motivate one student might not work for another student.

I find it incredibly rewarding to see students develop both musically and technically. To find their own voice.

Junah is one of the most dedicated teachers I have ever met. His determination, focus, and support made all the difference in my playing ability. I could actually hear the difference in my playing from the start to the end of my lessons. He also has a wonderful sense of humor and is fun to work with!

Junah has helped my playing tremendously. He has a very unique approach to teaching that can help with both technical and musical issues, as well as the mental challenges of playing. I would highly recommend him for any age and level, and particularly very advanced players.

I have been studying viola with Junah for a few months now and he is without a doubt one of the finest teachers I have ever worked with. Junah is a rare gem of qualities - he is incredibly kind, patient and encouraging, and approaches music learning with thoughtfulness, humor, intellect and creativity. I look forward to my lessons with him every week and always come away feeling inspired and profoundly joyful about the music learning process. On top of his attributes as an exceptional teacher, Junah is a world-class performer and never fails to impress me with demonstrations every lesson. I started studying with him during the pandemic and his lessons have given me a profound boost in spirit, joy and productivity. I couldn’t possibly recommend Junah enough.

I have been taking viola lessons with Junah for almost 2 years and I am very happy with the substantial amount of progress that I feel I have made with my playing. Junah’s lessons include a great balance between focusing on technique and developing musical expression. As his student, he has encouraged me to find my own playing style and explore ways to expand it, broadening my range of skills. I have always felt that Junah truly cares about his students as he often explains how certain techniques and skills that he stresses are important for the professional world. Although I prefer in person lessons, I have found that Junah’s video lessons are also very effective and engaging.

Mr. Chung is incredibly insightful. Oftentimes, I feel like he has a knack for pinpointing exactly what makes something work, and when his suggestions are applied, one small thing makes a world of a difference.
He also has high standards and will not hesitate to demand for those standards to be met. By doing so, he has pushed me harder than Ive ever been pushed before.
At the same time, he also intuitively provides encouragement when I need it the most. I think he has placed genuine confidence in my potential, and that alone is invaluable to me.
I think its a balance of these characteristics that make studying with Mr. Chung such an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Over time, I feel that not only have I become more knowledgeable about the physical side of viola playing, I have also gained a deeper understanding of what it means to be an artist.

Junah is a passionate and dedicated professional with wide ranging experience as a teacher and performer. He is sensitive to how the student approaches things as an individual and highly adaptive in his teaching. Junah strikes a good balance between imparting important technical skills without losing touch of the expressive nature of music making. His familiarity with the Viola and Violin repertoire allows him to point out common traditions of playing and difficult passages while encouraging authentic and imaginative playing. Always experimenting with his approach to playing and performing, Junah is excited to pass on new discoveries and perspectives to his students.

I try to get a sense of their personality, where they might need help both in their playing and practice habits.  I set goals and establish strategies to help them feel successful and achieve their goals.
