About

My educational and professional background is a balance between performance and teaching. I have honed my craft through traditional Classical piano lessons at Stellenbosch University and the Cleveland Institute of Music, but I've also spent many hours studying child development, piano teaching methods, and I continue to read the latest research on educational trends. I value enjoyment in lessons. I believe that students of all ages learn best and find the most fulfillment when they are intrinsically motivated to engage in an activity. It is my goal to facilitate a love and commitment for music and learning, irrespective of students' ages, backgrounds, or learning goals.

Nothing excites me more than enabling others to engage with music. Although I love performing, I feel that my vocation lies in teaching music. I am motivated by the joy students experience when they master a goal or play their first performance. I also love working with children - their capacity to learn and their innate playfulness are inspiring.

Frequently asked questions

My core philosophy is that learning occurs best through enjoyment. Hard work and commitment are also essential to success, but I've found that the motivation to work hard develops naturally when students are interested and stimulated by lessons. My approach to technical aspects of playing piano is rooted in years of research and education from master pianists, but I also adapt my teaching methods to suit the needs, interests, and personalities of each student. I have a deep passion for music and I hope to impart some of this passion with each of my students, no matter the age.

Education: Bachelor of Music (Piano), Stellenbosch University Postgraduate Certificate in Education, Stellenbosch University Masters in Music Education, Case Western University (piano lessons at the Cleveland Institute of Music) Teaching: Piano Studio of beginner to intermediate students, children (age 3 and up), teens, and adults: 7+ years Piano Teaching Assistant at Stellenbosch University: 1 year Graduate Assistant at Case Western Reserve University's Music Department: 2+ years Teacher at High School: 1 year

I'm currently running a discounted rate of $25 per half hour, $30 per 45 minute lesson, and $40 per hour. I also charge $10 once per semester for printing costs, unless I ask the student to purchase a method book, in which case the $10 fee is waived. The first lesson is free.

I've been playing piano since I was a child. I discovered my love for teaching music in my first year at college, and I have been specializing in pedagogy since then. Teaching music brings me great joy. It is a privilege to foster and nurture a love for music in others, and I am always astounded by how students develop when they are motivated to learn.

All types! Ages ranging from 3 to 67, interests ranging from Classical music to Blues and Pop, and students ranging from beginners to advanced. I enjoy working with students from a variety of different backgrounds and I recognize that all students learn in unique and wonderful ways.

Look for a professional who has a background in both performing and teaching.

What are my musical goals? Do I want to play recreationally or perform professionally? Do I want my children to cultivate a love for music, or is my primary goal to prepare them for a future in music? (Perhaps it's a bit of both.)
