Mike Varrone Music
About
I am a classically trained percussionist schooled at Indiana University, Bloomington.
As a musician with classical skills as well as jazz, rock, and gospel I am able to teach many styles all with the precision and enjoyment of a professional.
My passion is teaching students the tools so the they can reach their goals. I love making it fun yet challenging.
Music is for enjoyment so making lessons fun is essential for easy learning. In utilizing proper playing methods, including Feldenkrais principles, students can achieve success without injury.

most types. Also with learning challenges. I am currently working with 2 young adults with autism.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
a student asked me to teach him a skill outside the lesson plan. I did not tell him he was not ready for the particular skill. I developed a series of excersises for him to build and achieve the skill. He initially struggled and then after a couple of weeks we went to the drum set and I told him to play the exercise on the set. All of a sudden he smiled at the excitement of succeeding. He learned the value of the journey and how to practice difficult techniques and how to gain the skill.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would advise to seek out a professional who also teaches. A teacher can teach knowledge but a professional can teach “why.”
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What is the student’s goal(s).
Is this for fun, serious career, or to engage in a musical group?
what is the amount of time they can devote to practice?
