About

Greg Allen was born into a musical legacy begun by his Father, legendary bluegrass musician and IBMA Hall of Fame inductee Red Allen. The family's legacy grew as they became one of the most popular bluegrass groups in American music history. Along with his Father and his brothers Ronnie, Neal, and Harley, Greg toured and recorded on such notable record labels as Folkways (now Smithsonian Folkways), Rounder, King Bluegrass and Lemco. He is a songwriter, arranger, vocalist and a teacher of the banjo.

Greg has developed a simple method to help all banjo students comprehend more readily. Once the student applies this method, the tablature hurdle that once was confusing to many beginners is simplified, enabling them to find the road to success and begin to master the details the great players use.

Greg Allen is a wonderful mandolin and banjo teacher. He is, of course, a very experienced and accomplished player. And he has developed a unique method, using traditional bluegraaa songs we all love. Greg tailors lessons to the interests and level of the student. And, most importantly, he makes it fun!

Greg is very good at teaching his students. He has a great compassion for what he does. I thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent together taking lessons on the mandolin. He has become a great friend. I would highly recommend Greg if you are thinking about lessons on the banjo, guitar or mandolin. Thank you so much Greg, it was a great pleasure.

Greg is the best banjo teacher around! He is patient, funny, and easy to approach. He has me playing an instrument I was not sure I would ever be able to play!

I have been a beginner banjo student of Gregs for one year now. I see him weekly for one hour sessions. During the beginning I had serious reservations about whether I was musically inclined or had enough innate talent to learn this instrument. Gregs developed teaching method as well his one on one approach, have proven to be just what I needed to gain confidence that I can do this if Im willing to put in the work and follow his lead. He continues to demonstrate amazing patience with my beginner foibles and can spot technique or knowledge deficiencies quickly so that getting into bad habits is avoided. It goes without saying that his mastery of most accoustic instruments and wonderful career as a professional musician has proven to be invaluable to informing his teaching style and delivery. I have no problem highly recommending Greg as your music teacher.

    Frequently asked questions

I do one on one with every student so I can show them what they need to work on in the lesson and at home. All student is different and at different levels so thats why its very importent to see them alone and in a make the lesson be as fun as we can.

For decades, Greg has been sought after by professionals and students alike who seek to learn his way of playing. Greg considers himself a lifetime student of the banjo, noting that "no-one knows it all", and has said that he is "constantly learning something new nearly every day".

While Greg may consider himself a lifetime student, among the best banjo players in the world he is known to be a master at his craft. The difference between the best and the “Best of the Best” is in the details. One only need to listen to a single track of Greg’s music to appreciate the distinct playing style that makes those details come alive.
