Lingyuan (Maggie) Zhao, received her MFA degree in choreography at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. In 2002, Zhao began professional dance training at the Chongqing Dance School in China where she studied ballet, Chinese Classical dance, and Chinese majority and minority dances. Later, in 2007, Zhao decided to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree at Beijing Capital Normal University where she was introduced, and fell in love with modern and contemporary dance, dance composition, and dance pedagogy. In between, Zhao worked in the Asian Dance Research Center as a dance teacher. Due to her passion and curiosity for choreography, diverse dance styles, and dance pedagogy in higher education, Zhao then made the decision to study abroad in the United States, investigating her cross-cultural, inter-cultural, and transnational choreographic and pedagogical methodology, specifically a fusion of Chinese and American dance incorporating the dualities of tradition and modernity, as well as restriction and freedom.
