Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to run an extended first lesson to establish:
- current creative and skill level
- desired creative and skill level
-preferable learning and experimentation techniques
-time spent outside of lesson on project/practice (if any)
And to get to know you so we can communicate happily and efficiently!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BFA in Multidisciplinary Fine Arts from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia.
I have given private drawing lessons for three years and lead countless group and private craft activities in the past ten years.
my freelance work, while not always focused on fine arts, is ALWAYS focused on constructive critiquing and problem solving while skill building!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My current base rate for lessons is $50 which includes the lesson as well as prep material/activities and in between lesson assignments granted the student has the ability to spend the time on them. I love to offer and extended time for the first session at no upcharge so we can really get on the same page!
How did you get started teaching?
my learning language is through person to person teaching and hands on experimentation. Along with my excitement for many creative medium and outlets this has led to me naturally finding myself taking the wheel of collaborative creative projects. Eventually this developed into one on one creative collaborations and then to one on one lessons, mostly through word of mouth and friends of friends! I have also taught language classes and love helping people express themselves in any way!
What types of students have you worked with?
All of my students have ranged from young adult 45 and under to toddler age but I am comfortable and happy to work with students of any age and background! All of my students have had some background interest or practice in the arts but I would love to work with someone who is new to the hobby and help build their foundation!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently led a friend of mine into an expansion of her textiles business by refurbishing and reupholstering furniture with her for her store. I was able to use my knowledge and teaching skills to not only collaborate with her on some fun and profitable projects but was able to teach her a new skill set that she can expand on in her future.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Have in mind, or in a list, some goals for yourself! These can be low pressure or high hopes type of goals, short term or long term goals, but visualization is important in finding your next step.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How do I feel currently about my creative process and how would I like to feel? Do I have time to work on my process outside of my lesson with my teacher (this extra time is not necessary to learning but necessary to know).?Do I have example Sof my current process or skills I can share with my teacher?
